The Jameel Prize: Art Inspired by Islamic Tradition
Of all the Palo Alto events in coming months, few are as exciting as "The Jameel Prize: Art Inspired by Islamic Tradition," on view for the first time in the US at Stanford's Cantor Arts Center, December 12th – March 10th, 2013 (Wednesday–Sunday, 11am-5pm; Thursday 11am-8pm). This breathtaking art show features the work of 10 artists chosen as finalists for the Jameel Prize, a renowned award for contemporary art inspired by Islamic tradition, presented with the winning piece from 2011.
From content to execution, every piece on display is a synergy of past and present, innovative technique and tradition. The goal of the show is both to celebrate the finalists' work, as well as open a dialogue regarding the role of Islamic culture in today's globalized world of art, and beyond. Pieces on display include costumes, terracotta sculptures, mirrored mosaics, digital collages, installations, and paintings. Admission is free.
