Stanford Church: The University\'s Architectural Crown JewelStanding proudly at the center of campus, Stanford Memorial Church is the physical and spiritual center of the university. An interdenominational church with an active congregation, this dazzling structure features gorgeous stained glass windows in myriad colors, beautiful mosaic designs and plentiful stone carvings. Construction began in 1899 on the Stanford Church, whose architecture was inspired by European Romanesque cathedral. With natural stone, massive columns and red tiled roofs, this monumental church is one of the top attractions at Stanford University.
The Stanford University church is free to visit, and open for visitors Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM, and on Sundays from 11:30AM to 3:30PM. It\'s closed during services, on University holidays, winter closure and on Commencement weekend. Free guided tours are available every Friday at 2PM and the last Sunday of the month at 11:15AM – and you can also download a self-guided tour brochure online.
